Dog Day: Freeloaders We Love
January 16, 2008
On one episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David’s post-Seinfeld exploration of our modern cultural zeitgeist, he explains why he got rid of his dog by saying “It’s like having a bum living in your house.”
As much as I adore Mr. David’s show and can understand how he might feel that way (Larry’s character has had his share of run-ins with unsavory types), I’m more inclined toward the following joke I once heard on CBC One (Canada’s public radio station):
The dog says, “You pat me. You feed me. You shelter me. You love me: you must be God!”
The cat says, “You pat me. You feed me. You shelter me. You love me: I must be God!”
Needless to say, I prefer dogs to cats.
And even though the Furry Girls may laze around quite a bit during the day, those soulful brown eyes and wagging tails make it all worthwhile (well, maybe, except for the part about picking up poo in a plastic bag).
I thought today’s entry would be perfect for Peanut Butter Etoufees Food Bloggy Pets of the Month event.
(“Chaser and I are very grateful, Mum. We will wag our tails for you any time. Now, please bring me over another biscuit, and be sure to spread a little of that nice organic peanut butter on it, would you?“)

now that strikes a chord with me – our cat is going through a phase of waking us in the night so dogs are sounding like a good option – I grew up with dogs and they make sense to me but I still find our dear wee cat a mystery!

Hi Ricki,
I’m laughing over here, because my golden retriever puppy (is 1 1/2 years old still a puppy?) feels the same way. My favorite thing in the world is to hear her happy noises (i.e. grunts) when I rub her belly. And she thrives on her role as “head chef” in the kichen. She hovers over me while I prep vegetables and offers to be the official taster, too.
Thanks for stopping over at my blog. I’ll be checking in on your kitchen adventures, too!

Johanna,
I’m with you on the cat thing! Total enigmas. One of my sisters has cats, though, and she loves them to bits and swears that they are just as lovable as dogs. I have my doubts!
Karen,
Thanks for visiting and welcome! I really enjoyed your blog.
Yes, I have a feeling that most dogs would love the role of head chef (or more importantly, head taster) in the kitchen! One and a half is still a puppy (though, with Goldens, I’d say 9 or 10 years old is still a puppy, too!).

Ricki-
Your pups are adorable!! And yeah, I am a dog person for a reason too 🙂
Thanks for the info on those vegetarian cookbooks – I definitely plan on checking out more of her stuff.
I am excited to learn more about vegan cooking through your site… I have a lot to learn for sure!
Have a great night 🙂

Poor little kitties get a bum rap. They vary widely in personality. Our kitty Foo certainly thinks he’s a little prince at times, but there’s also nothing that makes him happier than curling up with one of us at any time of the day or night. And Olivia, our other kitty, can be skittish at times, but when she lets us rub her belly, she just rolls around purring loudly. It’s so cute.
Johanna, I don’t know if you’ll read this post again, but cats are naturally nocturnal. That’s why we quit letting ours in the bedroom at night. And–this may sound mean, but I do love the little boogers–they are terrified of the vacuum cleaner, so we have the vacuum set up by our bedroom door on a simple remote (the kind people use for lights). If one meows at the bedroom door at night, we turn on the vacuum cleaner by flipping the switch on the night stand. It’s cut way down on meowing needy kitties waking up from the sleep we so desperately need.
